IN 1801, the third Duke of Richmond and Gordon had a very good idea.

His father gave him his baptismal name from a clannish feeling for the Duke of Gordon.

The village was laid out on a grid pattern by the 4th Duke of Gordon in 1775.

He succeeded as 4th Duke of Gordon in 1752.

He was succeeded by his son George Gordon, 5th Duke of Gordon.

The village owes its existence to Alexander Gordon, 4th Duke of Gordon (1743-1827).

As a consequence the Government asked Jane's husband, the Duke of Gordon, to raise another regiment.

George and Elizabeth did not have any children, and on his death in 1836, the line of the Dukes of Gordon became extinct.

Lady Henrietta Mordaunt (died 1760), married the 2nd Duke of Gordon and had issue.

The 92nd were raised as the 100th Highlanders by the Duke of Gordon in 1794 being renumbered 92nd in 1798.
