"The museum did things its own way, without coming to anyone else," Mr. Hammer said.

Mr. Hammer makes a plea for more government research in fighting cancer.

Mr. Hammer said he expected to seek that permission in coming weeks.

Mr. Hammer retired as executive vice chairman of the appeal in 1974.

She held more shares than any other individual family member, Mr. Hammer said.

Mr. Hammer repaid the favors in many ways, large and small.
