While the comet's dust tail roughly followed the path of the comet's orbit and the gas tail pointed almost directly away from the Sun, the sodium tail appeared to lie between the two.

So did a number of other phenomena seemingly unconnected with the aurora, for instance the streamers and condensations in the gas tails of comets.

To take another example, a century ago neither aurorae nor cometary gas tails could be satisfactorily explained within the scientific framework then existing.

During the ram pressure stripping process, the charged particles strip and push away the infalling galaxy's gas, just as the solar wind of charged particles pushes ionized gas away from a comet to create a gas tail.
