- Note that they have nothing to do with open and close vowels.
- In the close vowels, the shortened and lengthened vowels remain distinct from originally short and long vowels.
- Open vowels are marked by a line under the letter (e ), while a dot below the letter makes it a close vowel (ẹ).
- The six close vowels identified within the International Phonetic Alphabet are:
- Of the 17 diphthongs, 14 are formed from any vowel followed by a close vowel.
- Additionally, there are dedicated letters for four semivowels that correspond to the four close cardinal vowel sounds:
- Vowel length is generally not important: close vowels tend to be longer than open vowels.
- The defining characteristic of a near-close vowel is that the tongue is positioned similarly to a close vowel, but slightly less constricted.
- Near-close vowels are sometimes described as lax variants of the fully close vowels.
- In all the documented dialects, all but the two close vowels may be nasalized.
