Entering Trinity College, Dublin, in 1828, he became the class-fellow and intimate friend of Isaac Butt, with whom he always preserved a warm friendship although they differed in politics.

He was an undergraduate at Trinity College, Dublin, where he distinguished himself in both science and classics, and was a class-fellow and friend of William Rowan Hamilton, graduating B.A. in 1827.
