The puzzle has similarities to a much older puzzle known as The Great Tantalizer and derives from a set of 30 cubes devised by Percy Alexander MacMahon.

His dam, Tantalizer was a good racemare who was placed in the Irish Oaks and the Ribblesdale Stakes and was a half-sister of the outstanding stayer Trelawny.
