In 1884 he was appointed university reader in ecclesiastical history.

In 1887 he became university reader in ancient history, and two years later was elected to the Camden professorship.

In 1880, he became university lecturer on classical archaeology at Cambridge University, and in 1883 university reader.

In 1888 Kenny became university reader of English law at Cambridge University, and resigned from parliament to concentrate on work at the university.

In 1978, the University Readers at Penn State University presented a dramatization, directed by Joseph Wigley, of four of Tenn's short stories under the title Four From Tenn.

Given Oxford's policy on admitting women she was not granted a degree from Oxford until after World War I. She was appointed lecturer, then university reader (in 1928-the first woman at Oxford to achieve that position), and became vice-principal of Somerville in 1929.
