"It makes him sound like an awfully bad man," Ace said softly.
Ace didn't say she could take care of herself.
"But maybe we don't need them," Ace said slowly, thinking it out.
Ace didn't say anything, but her face was white again.
"There's plenty for everyone," Ace said, setting it down in the middle of the table.
"I came to look at that," Ace said, and pointed to the vacant lot.
"Not me," Ace said in a low voice, shaking his head.
"I wouldn't doubt it a bit," Ace said, meaning to do no such thing.
