Together with companies from four other colonies, they initially formed the 1st Australian Regiment.

The company left for South Africa in November 1899, and on arrival was incorporated in the Australian Regiment.

In 1949 the battalion had been renamed the 3rd Battalion, Australian Regiment, and was later granted the 'Royal' prefix.

The battalion was redesignated the 3rd Battalion of the Australian Regiment upon the Regiment's formation in November 1948.

Previously also by the Australian Special Air Service Regiment, however this was replaced by the tan beret (sometimes referred to as the sandy beret).

The Australian Special Air Service Regiment has been based at Campbell Barracks since the Regiment was first established as an independent company in 1957.

From 1957, some members of these companies went on to assist and/or join the new Australian Special Air Service Regiment (SASR), when it was raised.

A month earlier, on 23 November 1948 it was renamed the 2nd Battalion, Australian Regiment, with the Royal regimental prefix being granted on 31 March 1949.
