Bank of America's stock, which hit a 52-week low of $36.31 last week, rose $2.56 a share yesterday, to close at $43.44 a share.

Bank of New York's stock fell 37.5 cents yesterday, to $45.25.

From a low of $36 in 2000, Bank of America's stock slowly but steadily moved higher.

Bank of New York's stock closed at $38.375, up 37.5 cents.
