The museum will be an extension of the Bard Center for Curatorial Studies, which shows temporary exhibitions in its 9,500 square feet of galleries.

"Now Bard will become an art destination," said Tom Eccles, executive director of the Bard Center.

The Bard Center is one of only three places in the United States where a student can obtain an advanced degree in the decorative arts.

She hired away some of Cooper-Hewitt's adjunct faculty, including Derek Ostergaard, who is now the dean at the Bard Center.

Today, the Bard Center operates on an annual budget of about $4.5 million, which comes from tuition, its endowment and foundations.
