"People have been very specific that as long as Bishop Walker was in charge of the diocese they won't give a penny,"' he said.

"Bishop Walker has been and continues to be a very effective leader," he said.

"This is not a decision that I have taken lightly," Bishop Walker wrote.

Last Sunday, between two services presided over by Bishop Walker, members of the cathedral parish met briefly to discuss the situation.

Since Bishop Walker has not visited our parish in some time, I am unsure of what he is basing this charge upon.

"I can't run a building on sentiment," Bishop Walker said when asked about the possible demise of the church and the arts center.

But Bishop Walker would not rule out a sale.

Bishop Walker actively protested against apartheid in South Africa.
