The original version was first republished in Black Colossus (Grant, 1979).

The original script for the film, written by Oliver Stone, was based on this novella and another Conan story, "Black Colossus", set in a post-apocalyptic future.

The sale of Black Colossus had convinced Howard that quality and strong characterization were not the essential elements when it came to selling a Conan story.
