Borders Group also launched a customer appreciation program called "Borders Rewards."
In March 2008, Borders Group announced the intention to sell the chain because of financial difficulties.
Brentano's is a bookstore chain owned by Borders Group.
But "overall costs are not much different based on the age of employees," said Dan Smith, senior vice president for human resources at the Borders Group.
Greg Josefowicz, the president and chief executive, said: "Borders Group is confident in the company's future.
The Borders Group kept selling the book, "Fortunate Son," though it is the only major bookselling chain to do so.
The Borders Group's newest executive has the book world a little puzzled.
(The company was subsequently renamed Borders Group, and went out of business in 2011.)
The Borders Group, the parent company, has 93 stores around the country.
Borders Group has eliminated six vice-president and ten director positions.
