Crook County was created with land ceded by Laramie County in 1875.

The largest body of water in Crook County is the Prineville Reservoir.

Campbell County was formed with land ceded by Crook County in 1911.

From 1882 to 1884 he was the county clerk for Crook County in Central Oregon.

In 1886, he was selected as sheriff of Crook County, serving in that office until 1888.

After leaving Congress he returned to Crook County and raising livestock and other agricultural activities.
