His thesis won the Best Doctoral Dissertation Award from Carnegie Mellon University's School of Computer Science.

In 2002, he was awarded the American Sociological Association's Dissertation Award for "Exchange in Blood and Organs."

The following year she was recognized by the International Reading Association for the Outstanding Dissertation Award.
