Diego Francisco Murillo, the commander of the AUC and known as Don Berna, once worked under Pablo Escobar and allegedly controls much of what was once Escobar's empire.

One, Diego Fernando Murillo, better known here as Don Berna, is the former leader of a team of hit men who now oversees much of the cocaine trafficking along western Colombia.

Don Berna became known for taking over the drug trade around Medellín after drug kingpin Pablo Escobar was killed.

One of the leaders of Los Pepes was Diego Murillo Bejarano, also known as "Don Berna".

The next day, 'Don Berna' pleaded innocent to money laundering and drug trafficking charges filed by United States (federal) prosecutors of the Southern District of New York state.

"That applies to Don Berna or whomever," he said.

Mr. Murillo, 43, known as Don Berna, began life on Wednesday in a house in northern Córdoba State as Congress debated the proposal that would govern the demobilization of paramilitary commanders.

Originally founded by former Popular Liberation Army guerilla Diego Murillo Bejarano, aka Don Berna, as an enforcement wing for the Medellín Cartel.

This episode led to Baez' decision to work closely with Diego Murillo Bejarano (aka "Adolfo Paz" aka "Don Berna") and Castano's brother Vicente Castaño.

Rodrigo Franco, a renegade commander who broke with other commanders over what he says were their ties to drug trafficking, said that, "With this, Don Berna has finished consolidating his power."
