Dr. Baker has a history of changing her mind on important issues.
Dr. Baker, a board member for four years, is the first black woman, and only the second woman, to serve as president.
In the case of the lakes, Dr. Baker said, the numbers could actually be higher.
Dr. Baker had paid a straight fee based on costs, not a percentage of the money raised.
But Dr. Baker said he was willing to wait for subjects.
Dr. Baker, 48 years old, said that while the collection looks imposing, it is not especially valuable.
"I think she clearly wants to help him in this way," Dr. Baker said.
Dr. Baker, who has been the trustees' chairman since 1980, will retire.
Dr. Baker said he thought both might have come from the same sea vent.
Now, with some new board members and a change of heart by Dr. Baker, a 5-to-2 majority supports the idea.
