The beach is famous for its multiple Esplanade Hotels.

In 1935 the hospital was converted into The Esplanade Hotel.

At the south end on the east corner of Artillerigatan and Strandvägen is the Esplanade Hotel.

The convicts were initially housed in the warehouse premises of the harbourmaster, which is now the Esplanade Hotel.

This hastened James's death, which occurred at his home, the Esplanade Hotel, on the 25 January 1907.
