What did the Founders mean by "religion"?

Did the Founders mean to prohibit favoritism in behalf of one religion over another, or did they mean to prohibit all contact between church and state?

One similar example Breyer cited was the 1796 case Ware v. Hylton, which, Breyer wrote, was illustrative of what "the Founders meant when they wrote [in the Supremacy Clause of the United States Constitution] that 'all Treaties ... shall be the supreme Law of the Land.'"

Hamilton's capitalization of "political," more than one legal commentator noted, signified that the Founders meant impeachment to deal with official misdeeds of a high order, not with petty squabbles.

Granted, the Constitution is not all that clear in this and many other matters, and we can argue endlessly about exactly what the Founders meant by the words "high crimes and misdemeanors."
