On July 5, 1742 Montiano landed nearly 1900 men from 36 ships near Gascoigne Bluff, close to the Frederica River.
The beaches front the ocean, but the interior part of the island is bordered by marshes and the Frederica River, which are popular with kayakers and fishermen.
