FCCLA began on June 11, 1945, as Future Homemakers of America (FHA).
The language in the group's brochures is devoid of sexism, and about 20 percent of the members of Future Homemakers are boys.
Ms. Helt said individual chapters of Future Homemakers delved into the complexities of modern life differently.
The number of boys who call themselves Future Homemakers has risen steadily since 1965, from less than 1 percent of the group's membership to 16 percent this year.
Even Future Homemakers has debated over the years whether to change its name.
"Back then, we were teaching young ladies how to function in a nuclear family," said Mrs. Henderson, who was on the board of Future Homemakers from 1986 to 1990.
