The Metro is the least expensive model in the Geo line, with a list price for the 1990 version at just under $6,000.
Chevrolet dealers, who are currently selling two models imported from Japan along with the joint-venture cars, will be the first dealers to handle the Geo line.
Initially there were 3 models: a base convertible, base hardtop and a CL hardtop (CL is equivalent to the LSi in the Geo line).
The 1990s saw fading consumer interest in the economy compact market, and the last vehicle of the former Geo line, the Tracker, was discontinued in 2004.
Isuzu - which is partly owned by G.M. - produces several cars in G.M.'s Geo line.
"With the Geo line, if a car fades, they can drop it easier than if it was called a Chevrolet," said Jack Price, a dealer in Omak, Wash.
Ford executives are quick to point out that Chevy has gained by virtue of the Geo line of small cars.
The Geo line is a joint venture between Toyota and G. M.'s Chevrolet division.
G.M. officials, at a press preview of 1990-model cars and trucks, also said they would change the marketing strategy for the Geo line of small cars.
G.M. created the Geo line recently as a marketing channel for such cars and for the vehicles it imports from Asia.
