The surrounding area forms the Grey Mare's Tail Nature Reserve, owned by the National Trust for Scotland.

It long preserved traditional customs, notably the Mari Lwyd or Grey Mare.

The Grey Mare's Tail Tower, probably built in the 1290s, has a slit in each of its five faces, offering views along the curtain wall.

North-East of Moffat is the Grey Mare's Tail waterfall.

It is located about 10 miles to the north-east of Moffat and feeds the 60-metre (200ft) high Grey Mare's Tail waterfall.

There are three main points of entry from Moffatdale; Capplegill, Carrifran and Grey Mare's Tail.

However you can get some interesting views of the Grey Mare's Tail at the top of that descent.
