In 1988, the decorator began an association with Hickory Chair, a leading furniture manufacturer in North Carolina, creating furnishings for the well-heeled consumer.

At Hickory Chair, for whom Mr. Hampton designed a West Indian rope-turned bed and other historically based furniture, Hampton style will continue to be sold.

"Our customers, middle management, lost jobs," said William Merrill, the director of design at Hickory Chair.

Under one of those fans in Hickory Chair's showroom was Mr. Hampton's voluptuous wicker lounge chair ($1,535) and matching ottoman ($725.)

The architect William Poole, known for his mini-mansion designs, weighed in with his own collection for Hickory Chair.

As a flier from Hickory Chair said, "The pieces are generously scaled and proportioned, complementing today's larger living styles."

Stodgy, too, were Mark Hampton's additions to his European Country Collection for Hickory Chair, a division of Lane.

Radically, and unlike most old-school furniture makers here, Hickory Chair no longer presents its new lines in neatly matching sets.
