Mr. Aldrich guided the development of the Irvine campus from its groundbreaking in 1962 until his retirement in 1984.

"He was always doing courageous things, expanding the limits of research," said Dr. Jonas Schultz, another physicist at the Irvine campus.

Pereira intended for the UC Irvine campus to complement the neighboring community, and the two grew in tandem.

"It turned out to be nothing," said Kathleen Stanley, chief of police at the Irvine campus.

But to prepare Sherman students for college, the creators of the magnet program decided to offer the top students the opportunity to spend two weeks at the Irvine campus.

But since his arrival on the Irvine campus, Mr. Quinn said he has decided to first study medicine at the University of Arizona.

Dr. Rowland was assisted in the Mexican study by Donald R. Blake, a senior research associate at the Irvine campus.

As one telling example, Ford decided to move Lincoln and Mercury sales and marketing staff to the company's Irvine, California, campus in July 1998.

Meanwhile, the California College of Medicine was adopted by the University of California Regents in 1964 and placed on their Irvine campus in 1968.
