All four finalists - Mr. Evans, 24, Eric Lewis, 26, Jacob Sacks, 22, and Sam Yahel, 28 - played again, for 10 minutes each.

Dan Weiss, also a drummer, is well versed in Indian classical music, as well as in rock and modern jazz; he plays a later set with his frequent colleagues the pianist Jacob Sacks and the bassist Thomas Morgan.

Mr. Opsvik's band Overseas, which features Tony Malaby on tenor saxophone, Jacob Sacks on Wurlitzer piano and Kenny Wolleson on drums, heeds more of a compositional framework.
