The glacier lies on the northern slopes of Mount Lyell.
During the mid-20th Century, the glacier split into two smaller glaciers occupying the high cirques of Mount Lyell.
Conservation measures in recent decades have put special restrictions on the activity so as to not replicate the damage of the Mount Lyell operation.
In the early stage of operations, Mount Lyell was surrounded by smaller competing leases and companies.
It is situated between Mount Lyell and Donahue Peak.
Before reaching Donahue Pass, the route leaves the trail and heads south towards Mount Lyell.
The resurvey biologists documented the pinyon mouse on Mount Lyell at elevation 10,500 feet.
"They were known up to 7,600-7,800-feet elevation, and I trapped them almost at tree line just below Mount Lyell at 10,500 feet," he said.
The Mount Lyell mine extracts copper and gold.
