Mr. Kerry has raised $3.6 million in the same period, and spent $6.5 million.

Though campaign officials have long said Mr. Kerry could spend more personal money, they were focused this week on raising it from others.

It is only natural that Mr. Kerry would raise - and spend - far more now that he is the expected nominee.

Mr. Kerry spent about $14.5 million in March and has spent about $53.5 million over all, according to his campaign.

Mr. Kerry, for example, spent nearly $2 million last week on advertising in Colorado and Louisiana.

The money has allowed Mr. Kerry to spend $43 million on television advertising since May and to add campaign staff in critical swing states.
