The township was created in 1974 after the amalgamation of two other townships: Marlborough, and North Gower.
In 1905 Rideauville, Westboro and North Gower were incorporated as police villages.
He currently lives in North Gower, Ontario.
On December 8, 1995, in North Gower, the provincial and federal governments announced a financing deal to ensure Highway 416 South was completed by 2000.
The village of North Gower was first settled in 1846 and was originally known as Stephensville.
