Three years later in September 1686 he was created cardinal with the permission of Pope Innocent XI.

The congratulations of Pope Innocent XI followed on August 10.

Pope Innocent XI confirmed both appointments on September 4, 1679.

Then in 1679 Pope Innocent XI appointed him a second time and he was forced to accept.

A number of these scandalous propositions were later condemned by Pope Innocent XI.
