Professor King said a question would be: "If it is necessary to cut back, is everybody taking some sort of haircut?"

"Secrecy protects not only those who might be innocent," Professor King said.

Professor King, a Canadian who has been here 40 years, was dubious.

Professor King said his research showed that people born in 1952 reflected the lowest level of trust in the military.

Professor King said that withholding names and addresses should not stop lawyers from questioning jurors about their possible prejudices.

"His standing with the public has gone up," Professor King said.

"It's very difficult to interview men cold about a serious problem in their lives," Professor King said.

And now Professor King has produced the computer software to recognize that voice pattern.

"The overarching purpose is to stimulate public discussion of the medical profession in society," Professor King said.

What people in the group's audiences seem to crave, Professor King said, is more time, concern and compassion from their physicians.
