Since M-39 was moved to Southfield Road in the end of the 1950s, Schaefer Highway has been a locally maintained road.
The first branch office was opened in 1948 on Grand River near Southfield Road in Northwest Detroit.
It had previously been located in three other locations, most recently on Southfield Road in Lathrup Village.
In 1955 the congregation had relocated to a new building on Southfield Road.
After a time in Southfield Road, the centre is now in Lorne Street and was opened in 1990.
North of 10 Mile Road, the freeway ends and continues as Southfield Road into Birmingham.
The rest of the highway follows Southfield Road, a divided highway in the Downriver area.
Southfield Road continues northward from the end of the freeway under local maintenance.
M-39 was reassigned to Southfield Road, connecting I-94 with Northwestern Highway in 1958-59.
It goes over the London Overground to Clapham Junction near Southfield Road.
