In one of the rare instances of a food lobby turning against one of its own, big agribusiness is siding with the administration against sugar.

The big agribusinesses that buy and process commodities like low prices.

However, clearly - and as is usually the case with recently created agricultural technologies - the real winners will be the biggest agribusinesses, the most powerful middlemen and, naturally, Monsanto.

The attempt to dilute these critical standards sheds light on how far big industrial agribusiness will go to put greed above the interests of American family farmers and organic food buyers.

"I can tell you," Murphey observed, "that politics-doesn't matter whether it's Democrats or Republicans-have been involved with big agribusiness for a long, long time."

"We don't want to give up all we've worked for simply to help big agribusinesses be more competitive."

Instead, he said, his targets are big agribusiness and "the landowner with a lawyer."

"That's the most important thing - starting to charge big agribusinesses," the minister said.

Small, family farmers deserve help, but big corporate agribusiness does not.
