Santiago Island holds the only breeding site of the endemic and critically endangered Bourne's Heron.

The only breeding site in South Africa, situated at Kamfers Dam, is threatened by pollution and encroaching development.

The subspecies is found on the beaches, pasture, rocky areas, and islands of the Recherche Archipelago, which is its only breeding site.

During the breeding season, they congregate to the best breeding site and compete for call time and recognition.

They are also a habitat for Brown Hares, and early breeding site for ground-nesting birds such as lapwing and curlew.

By arriving earlier, they get the best breeding sites.

Such a unique breeding site was necessary to produce the individuals that were reintroduced to Mongolia in 2004 and 2005.

After heavy rain many of these frogs may breed in one or two weeks, when in drier times the breeding site may appear absent of this species.

At this time The Pyramid is their only breeding site.

It can also breed in running water, so stagnant pools of water are not its only breeding sites.
