It was built in 1885 on ruins of a 7th century Byzantine monastery.

The village is best known for the 11th century monastery, Holy Mother of God.

A 4th century monastery sits on a hillside overlooking Armota.

Goseck grew in the fields surrounding a 14th century monastery.

At this lower level there is also an entrance to what is believed to be the original 6th century monastery and several large amphoras.

There was also a 12th or 13th century monastery on the south side of the island, dedicated St. Michael.

With the help of local people, Gaspar worked to repair the abandoned 10th century monastery.

The adjacent 17th century monastery has been converted into a modern museum and cultural center.

It is believed that a 5th or 6th century monastery existed at the place of the church.

Although the 17th century monastery was mostly destroyed in the 19th century, there are some ruins remaining.
