He was educated at Highgate School and Trinity College, Cambridge, taking a second class in the classical tripos (1878).
In 1858 he graduated B.A., being bracketed ninth in the first class of the classical tripos.
He won a scholarship to Clare College, Cambridge, where he gained a first in the classical tripos in 1902.
He was one of the first examiners for the new classical tripos of 1824, and again in 1826 and 1828.
