On February 4, 1855, Shelbyville was designated the county seat.

The community developed around this early settlement and was designated the county seat from 1802 to 1828.

Later that year the mining camp of Rocky Bar was designated the county seat.

Two years later the fledgling settlement was designated the county seat for Oakland.

Monticello was founded in 1804, and later designated the county seat.

Fossil was designated the temporary county seat at the time of the county's creation.

They also purchased the right to have their village designated the county seat for $1,000.

In 1658, it was designated the first county seat of Charles County.

It was designated the county seat in 1864, succeeding the community of Martinsburg.

It had already been designated the county seat by that point.
