"Coming up slow, Captain," the diving officer of the watch repeated.
"That's enough of that," he said to the diving officer.
He wheeled, walked across to the diving officer, spoke a few words to him, and returned.
He folded the handles up and turned to the diving officer.
"I want to hold us at four hundred feet, stay below him," Newell said to the diving officer.
That was up to the diving officer on watch.
"Add another two hundred feet," he called to the diving officer.
Together they landed at the feet of the diving officer, who was already braced against the control panel to his left.
The diving officer had now slumped over on his side in a pool of blood.
Lieutenant Miller alone had control of the ship as diving officer during the operation.
