Honda of America sold 2,333 domestic cars a day, up 25.8 percent.
If the American companies retain their current market share, they would then sell 7.2 million domestic cars.
This compares with the very strong 7.6 million rate for domestic cars during the first nine months of the year.
In late October 1987, it sold 155 domestic cars a day.
Chrysler sold 55,041 domestic cars in January, an increase of 31.9 percent from a year earlier.

By comparison, 7.1 million domestic cars were actually sold in 1987.
