"I left out the fact that I wanted to fight jihad," he wrote.

"America badly needs an alternative vision - rooted in the liberal tradition - for fighting global jihad," he writes.

"And yet the liberalism emerging today denies that fighting global jihad should even be a priority."

He knew he was going for military training, but said, "I wasn't planning on going to fighting jihad."
