From 1865 to the area's nomination for the National Register in 1984, the area saw little development, and remained much as it was during the battles.

And there is another obstacle: to be eligible for the National Register, a building normally has to be at least 50 years old.

After 1966 the commission served as the state's review board for the National Register of Historic Places.

It was nominated for the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
