The company had financial difficulties and Edward Howard left to form E. Howard & Co.
In 1864 the brothers formed a publishing business, Watts & Co.
He formed his own company, J. Vigor Brown and Co.
In 1871 Pemberton formed the stamp company James R. Grant and Co.
In 1884 he formed McWhirter & Co, which opened a works in Govan.
In 2006 he formed Christensen & Co.
It is the earliest of the predecessor institutions that eventually formed the current JPMorgan Chase & Co.
