At the 1923 Grouping, the GER was amalgamated with other companies to form the London and North Eastern Railway; this in turn was a constituent of British Railways at the start of 1948.

This railway company had joined other companies to form the London and North Western Railway.

On 1 August 1897 the MS&LR was renamed the Great Central Railway and this was merged with other railways to form the London and North Eastern Railway on 1 January 1923.

These two companies merged in 1846 to form the London and North Western Railway (LNWR).

These, in turn, merged in 1846, with the London and Birmingham Railway and the Manchester and Birmingham Railway to form the London and North Western Railway (LNWR).

Shortly after obtaining the Act the Company amalgamated with others to form the London and North Western Railway.

This in turn formed part of the London & North Eastern Railway in 1923 and then the Eastern Region of British Railways in 1948.

On 1 January 1923 the NER amalgamated with other companies to form the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER).

Eventually the complex relationship between the M&BR, the GJR and the L&BR was resolved by their merger in 1846 to form the London and North Western Railway.

The GJR merged to form the London and North Western Railway on 16 July 1846.
