Wholesale gasoline for October delivery fell 2.18 cents a gallon, to $1.0205, while heating oil slipped 2.72 cents, to $1.0120.
In other markets, gasoline fell while copper rose to its highest price in more than a month.
The biggest drop in prices was in energy commodities: gasoline fell 11 percent and residential natural gas fell 4.1 percent.
Heating oil shifted slightly upward to close at 52 cents a gallon, while unleaded gasoline fell a fraction, to 55 cents a gallon.
