A later single-member constituency called Mid Kent existed from 1983 to 1997.
Hughes was born in the Monmouthshire town of Pontllanfraith located in the valley north of his later constituency of Newport and worked as a miner from 1940 until 1943, completing grammar school at Pontllanfraith.
A later constituency, Coatbridge and Chryston, existed between 1997 and 2005, until it was redrawn as Coatbridge, Chryston and Bellshill.
The European Parliament constituencies used under that system were smaller than the later regional constituencies and only had one Member of the European Parliament each.
