Hamilton-Smith announced a second leadership ballot to be held on Wednesday 8 July.

This marked the first time in history that an incumbent Labor Leader was elected unopposed at a leadership ballot.

A total of 58 votes was required to secure a majority win the leadership ballot.

Under the Democrat constitution, a petition of 100 members can trigger a leadership ballot of all the members.

The leadership ballot was held on Thursday 29 November.

But turnouts in their own leadership ballots - not to mention many strikes ballot - are even more fragile.

Eventually, Adam Hamilton, a former Reform member, won the leadership ballot by one vote.

At the leadership ballot, Gillard won by a vote of 71 to 31.

Gillard defeated Rudd in the leadership ballot by 71 votes to 31.

After Hamilton resigned in October 1994, he voted in a 1995 leadership ballot.
