She said some of the local Serbs working as guards at the camp had tried to intervene.

The region itself is relatively sparsely populated and there was no obvious threat to local Serbs.

There were local Serbs going with them, showing them to the houses.

The paramilitary unit, according to the court records, decided to retaliate by killing local Serbs.

Some of those masked men, the Albanians said, were probably local Serbs.

But today the local Serbs made no attempt to block the convoy as it passed through their territory.

They marched to the two homes owned by local Serbs and wrecked them.

"Whoever the local Serbs didn't like, they told the soldiers to order them out of the car," the teacher said.

"There were still soldiers around, but the local Serbs told us to come back," the teacher recalled.

The local Serbs, they said, have told them that everything is going to be all right.
