We were now in what was known as "the lower village" of Montebello.

The church was on a small elevation, which descended sharply to the east toward the lower village some two hundred yards away.

In the lower village a few aboriginal families sell and display good quality arts & crafts.

And they were delighted - at first - with the workforce sent up from the lower village.

The Straußbuben from the lower village would do the reverse.

Since 2000, though, there have been no more Straußbuben in the lower village.

During this period, a church was built in the lower village.

In 1856, the whole lower village was destroyed in a great fire.

While the exact location of the church is no longer known, it was probably in the Unterdorf or lower village.
