In 1902 he was given an honourary membership of the Academy in Rotterdam.
In 1976 he was also awarded with honorary membership of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
He was subsequently elected to membership of the North British Academy of Arts.
He was proposed for associate membership of the Academy in 1812, but was not elected and never became a member.
In 1858 he was elected to full membership of the Academy.
The total membership of the Academy is 156 members (51 acting members and 84 corresponding members).
In the same year he was elected to membership of the Prussian Academy of Arts.
The membership of the Academy is restricted to scientists who have proven extraordinary contributions to the advancement of scientific research, education and knowledge.
In 1989, he was chosen to receive associate membership of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
He refused to do this, and consequently lost all his positions in Paris, except his membership of the Academy, for which an oath was not required.
